On the evening of August 10, 2026 (at approximately 5:30 PM), a sudden surge of floodwaters triggered by heavy rainfall and cloudbursts in the upper catchment area caused the Tamak Nala (drain) to overflow violently. The raging torrent washed away a critical Bailey bridge located on the Joshimath (Jyotirmath)–Malari–Niti National Highway in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand.

- A Border Roads Organisation (BRO) driver (identified as Pankaj, resident of Pithoragarh) was swept away by the powerful current when the bridge collapsed and remains missing.
- A BRO vehicle and equipment (dozer) were also carried away by the floodwaters.
- No additional human casualties have been confirmed so far.

- The bridge forms a critical link along the Jyotirmath–Malari–Niti route, connecting the region to strategically sensitive frontier areas near the India-China border.
- Isolation of Remote Villages:
- The collapse severed direct road access to approximately 12 to 16 border villages in the Niti Valley (including Niti, Malari, Gamshali, and Jumma).

Chief Minister Directives: Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami reviewed the emergency response, directing authorities to prioritize relief work, ensure uninterrupted delivery of rations, food, and essential medicines to isolated villages, and expedite alternative road restoration.
Additionally, the state government ordered a scientific investigation involving satellite imagery, GIS analysis, and drone surveys to examine the upper catchment area of Tamak Nala to determine whether the surge was triggered by extreme localized rainfall, slope failures, or geomorphological land subsidence.
